Many congratulations to Professor Pasuk Phongpaichit and Dr Chris Baker for being awarded this year's Grand Prize of the Fukuoka Prize in Japan.
The lengthy citation commended their remarkable personal and intellectual contribution to a better understanding of Thailand's history, economy, and culture. It cited "the multidisciplinary and comprehensive analysis of the social changes which Thailand has experienced since the period of rapid economic growth in the 1980s, an analysis based on a combination of Western and Eastern intellectual approaches, and of methodologies from the social sciences and the humanities, which has added breadth and depth to academic research, in both subject-matter and methodology, in a fresh and distinctively Asian way; and also because of their active contributions to society".
Chris and Pasuk, longtime members and friends of the FCCT, will be in the club on Wednesday 12 July to launch their latest book, A History of Ayutthaya: Siam in the Early Modern World
. Remarkably, this is the first study of the full 400-plus years of the Ayuttyaya era. Don't miss another great Wednesday night at the club.
