Full house: farewell evening for Derek Williams of Asiaworks and formerly CBS News, one of the last of the Vietnam War era correspondents.
Long overdue upgrades to the present clubhouse in the Maneeya Center - which we have occupied for over two decades - were carried out during 2017. Finishing touches are being made to the veranda where an additional four metres along the side of the building have been claimed. A quiet and efficient overhead air-conditioning system has been installed that not only keeps members cool throughout the year but saves the club some 7,000 baht a month in electricity bills. New, easily cleaned flooring has been installed. The club's ancient tables, which date from 1981 at the Oriental Plaza, have been renovated with solid tropical wood, and should be good for another 35 years or so. Toilets have been removed from the premises, and a badly-needed storeroom created in their place. The reception area now has a proper desk, and serves members much more efficiently.
Contributors to the FCCT Clubhouse Improvement Fund 2018 will have their names added to the brass plaque dating from 1989's successful fundraiser.
These and other improvements have been achieved with a budget of about one million baht. Relatively little further expenditure is needed for the fabric of the club. The main focuses now are on retraining staff and upgrading systems.
The FCCT owes a debt of thanks to the Maneeya Center which has contributed about another million baht to the cost of the new air-conditioning, flooring, and installing brand new toilets in the lift lobby area. The building's public areas and lifts have also been steadily upgraded in recent years. We are currently extending our lease, and our tenure
in these well-located premises is secure.
There remains room for improvement, however. A technical committee has been
assessing the shortcomings in our idiosyncratic audio-visual system, much of which is approaching the end of its working lifetime. Revamping the system will cost about 500,000 baht, and will considerably enhance our programme and documentary nights and other events.
Wednesday night programmes are an FCCT institution.
In 1989, when the FCCT was perched atop The Dusit Thani, its sound system had become so faulty that some guests arrived for presentations with their own equipment and technicians. The club's board at the time decided to upgrade amplifiers, speakers, microphones, and monitors by launching a fundraising appeal. There is nothing new about crowdfunding, and it was so successful then that the FCCT was able to make other clubhouse improvements.
As we did in 1989, we are therefore asking members to consider making a donation to the FCCT Clubhouse Improvement Fund 2018:
5,000 baht or more for private individuals.
25,000 baht or more from corporates and other organizations.
Donations that cross these thresholds will be honoured with an inscription on the brass plaque kept in the clubhouse for this purpose, which will remain on permanent display. They will also be noted in The Bulletin and on our website - unless requested otherwise.
In addition, anybody who chooses to take out a Lifetime Membership
this year will have 5,000 baht
placed in the Clubhouse Improvement Fund, and their name added to the list.
And next time you sit at one of our newly renovated tables, pause to wonder who else might have sat at it over the years.
Thank you for taking the time to read this.
