The Case for 112

8pm, Thursday, February 16, 2012
(Please see pricing and reservation procedure below)

A movement to change Article 112 of Thailand's criminal code, known as
the lese-majeste law, has gathered momentum over the past year. The
debate comes amid a surge in cases alleging insults to HM the King,
the Queen, the Crown Prince and the regent. Recent convictions such as the
2.5-year sentence for U.S. citizen Joe Gordon and a 20-year prison
term for Ampol Tangnoppakul, known as "Uncle SMS," prompted the U.S.,
European Union and United Nations to call on Thai authorities to
respect freedom of speech.

Dr. Tul Sitthisomwong, head of the multicolored group known as Network
of Citizen Volunteers Protecting the Land, has led efforts against calls
to change the lese-majeste law. The medical doctor
affiliated with Chulalongkorn University has rallied supporters to the
United Nations and U.S. Embassy last month and has held regular
meetings at Bangkok's Lumpini Park to generate support for Article
112.

Please join us to hear Dr. Tul and others make the case for why
Thailand needs Article 112.

*Other speakers will be announced as confirmed. The FCCT has also
invited members of Nitirat to give the opposing view, and will make
another announcement when that evening is confirmed.
