A Hidden Life: The Struggles of a Philippines Bar Worker

Abegail Delos Santos is a 21-year old bar girl who was already a mother of two in 2009, with a 3-year-old daughter and a 5-year old son suffering from Down Syndrome. She moved to Manila at the age of 7 when her parents separated and stopped schooling when she was in her third year of high school. She moved in with her boyfriend soon after getting pregnant.

After 3 years together, her boyfriend left without any notice when she gave birth to their second child. Abegail found a twobedroom house on the outskirts of the city with a backyard perfect for her kids' playground. She travels 40 minutes by jeepney to go to work. Her shift usually ends at 4 in the morning so she has to wait until sunrise to go home. Even though it's difficult, Abegail dedicated her life to work long hard hours and make time in her busy schedule to take care of what is hers.

In 2010,Abegail's son Arvy went to the public hospital because of a cold. He didn't get good treatment because Abegail did not have enough money. When Abegail found out that her son was getting worse, she moved him to a private hospital. Even though the doctor said he would be better, Arvy passed away the next morning - a drama unseen and unknown to the many patrons of the bar where Abegail works.

In this photo, Abegail plays basketball with her son in the early morning hours after work in Manila's red light district.
