As in other parts of Asia, acid attacks have become all too common in Cambodia to settle lovers' quarrels, domestic disputes, and business battles. Since the acid disfigures and often blinds an individual, victims suffer from depression, loss of self esteem and suicidal tendencies. In this photo, Sokreun Mean, 36, sits inside her shack where she lives with her 3 children and 14 other relatives. She was attacked outside her home with a large quantity of acid causing blindness and severe disfiguration to her face. She has been operated on over 20 times. She was divorced but the estranged wife of her husband became jealous and attacked her.
