A man hangs on to what remains of a house that was built on stilts as he tries to recover his belongings after powerful Typhoon Nesat wiped out homes along a coastal village north of Manila in September 2011. Residents across Asia have seen a growing number of fierce storms and other natural disasters in recent years – a problem many scientists attribute to climate change, which they fear is increasing the frequency of disasters and putting more people at risk.

Nesat unleashed floodwaters and harsh winds that killed at least 20 people and sent huge waves crashing over seawalls.
