The February 8 general election is shaping up to be another consequential moment in Thai politics.

The border tension with Cambodia – which escalated into deadly clashes twice last year – has put renewed focus on national security, civil-military relations and how future governments will manage relations with Phnom Penh.

The conflict has also cast an unusual spotlight on Thailand’s foreign policy and its place in an increasingly complex geopolitical landscape.

There is also the prospect of another economically challenging year, with heightened demands for the next government to deliver growth and prosperity while key engines like exports and tourism continue to underperform.

With a referendum on constitutional amendment set to take place alongside the poll, political parties will also be pressed to articulate their broader vision for the country’s political framework.
