Tiananmen Tonight: Journalism and Courage
Film, Thursday, 4 June, 7pm
In 1989, the Tiananmen uprising in Beijing dominated global news for more than six weeks. During that time, Dan Rather and his CBS colleagues reported on the demonstrations and eventual crackdown that they led to. Tiananmen Tonight: Journalism and Courage focuses on the CBS News team’s reporting on a significant moment in recent world history, looking at how it was told in the US. This is a drama that younger generations are not particularly familiar with.
Cameraman Derek Williams, a well-known stalwart at the FCCT in Bangkok, was part of that team and appears in the film, which is regarded as a pinnacle of US broadcast journalism. Today, even though technology has enabled faster access, foreign news networks are not able or willing to provide the same kind of in-depth coverage that occurred in 1989.
After the movie, the film-makers will join online for a question and answer session with the audience.
