On 23 March 2024, CATALYST Co. Ltd. (social enterprise) and its partners, the Thailand Consumers Council and National Science and Technology (NSTDA) launched the "Whisper of Freedom" exhibition and public forum at the Bangkok Art & Culture Center (BACC).
The initiative raises awareness and aims to catalyze the cage-free movement in Thailand. Dr Wadchara Pumpradit, President of CATALYST, underscored the growing demand for ethical and sustainable food production both locally and globally. The current battery-cage system fails to adhere to the 5-freedom principles of animal ethics, hindering hens from expressing natural behaviors and resulting in adverse outcomes. It is imperative that Thailand, as a global destination, needs to address animal ethics and sustainability in food production.
Itthaboon Onwongsa, deputy secretary general, emphasized the role of the Thailand Consumers Council (TCC) in safeguarding consumer rights, including the right to choose and be informed. TCC pledges support for the cage-free egg system, promoting food safety, animal ethics, and sustainability in Thailand. Additionally integrating consumer representation into the egg board is the mission of TCC.
Dr Jamroen Thiengtham, animal welfare specialist, and Dr Wisara Chaisalee from NSTDA highlighted the importance of recognizing farm animals as sentient beings deserving of ethical treatment. Collaborative efforts between government, academia, the private sector and communities are essential to ensure ethical standards in food production.
CATALYST and its partners are actively engaging in capacity building nationwide and across the ASEAN region to facilitate the transition to cage-free systems. During the "Whisper of Freedom" forum, Phungnoi Bakery Co. Ltd., a prominent bakery with branches across northern Thailand, committed to sourcing 100% of its eggs from cage-free farms within three years. This commitment aligns with Phungnoi Bakery's dedication to quality products and animal welfare. Thailand's aspiration to be a "world destination" extends beyond leisure and hospitality to encompass leadership in animal welfare and sustainability. CATALYST Co.
